Ah Code Lyoko one of the most underrated children’s shows

Feel free to ignore this, its just me gushing about how important Code Lyoko is to me.
I'm not one of those people who gets nostalgic and for multiple reasons, A) I'm very rarely emotionally sentimental towards media, B) I am a bit stunted emotionally, and C) due to a childhood/teenage years of a number of head injuries my memory is absolutely shot.
But through it all, Code Lyoko-the weird show from France with its stilted animation and repetitive plot-is what gets me. Not my favorite movies, games, or even other tv shows will do this to me.
Now, I started watching Code Lyoko when I was pretty young. I'm more or less a year older than it. So, when it was dubbed into english for the states, I was just old enough to catch onto the plot and some time later be enthralled with the later seasons/reruns. I have two older brothers and we all have vastly different taste in media, but for a solid part of my childhood we all agreed on a shared love for this show. We would meet in the den to watch the episodes every day and get along as only kids watching cartoons can.
When we moved states the subject I was most upset over was that CN for some reason didn't have Code Lyoko in this new area. Which, considering the move took probably about a day or two, really confused me. But for years this show lived only in my memory, not even my friends at school-in grades above or below-knew what I was talking about.
Some years pass, Code Lyoko is this shiny little memory that sits in the back of my brain, and I'm given a gen 1 iPad. It's slow, it dies quickly, I didn't even have my own headphones, but I didn't have to share with my brothers and had Youtube.
Now, for any young folk reading this for some reason (first off, good on you for getting into Code Lyoko) Youtube had been around for a few years at this point and had only really started getting traction circa 2008-09. The fun thing about early Youtube was that you could watch anything. Very few restrictions, no concept of enforcing copyright, it just had to be ten minutes or less and even that was beginning to change(I think). This was the era of watching a lagging anime in 3-4 parts an episode, and this is where I was able to finally watch Code Lyoko again.
I remember very specifically marathoning the show in the kitchen, sitting oddly in an arm chair, utterly engrossed in this show. It had action, it was 3D animated, the characters were cool and funny, and I would've done anything to have a hangout like the factory. Not to mention the intro was the best thing I'd ever heard and still is to this day one of my favorites.
But why do I love this show? Well a couple reasons...
Thing 1: Animation
Now I know the jokes and the jabs and the fact that its old and dated are what anyone unfamiliar with the show is quick to point out. If anyone has even passing knowledge of Code Lyoko its usually the weird character designs. If you watch the show you get used to it and sorta come to notice that it fits the characters much better in the 3D world more than the 2D and Lyoko is where all the cool action scenes are so.
And, I don't know if this is a hot take, but I like the 3D animation a lot. It looks like the ps2/3 games we would play as kids, and the premise is basically kids fighting monsters in a video game in 2003. It's an aesthetic that I appreciate for better or worse.
Thing 2: Stakes/Story
Code Lyoko is one of the few shows (cartoons especially) with the unique ability to be episodic in a serialized way. Things build up, connect, and whatever big changes happen in the past seasons continue on in the following. This was kinda insane to young me, shows were episodic or serialized, not both. Not to say there was nothing else (Teen Titans, Generator Rex, X-Men Evolution, Avatar, etc.) nor to say that Code Lyoko was the best at doing this, but no matter how repetitive the usual episodes are it more than makes up for with the stakes of those epidoes.
I don't think many cartoons put the kids in as imiment danger as Code Lyoko. Military satellites, Nuclear collisions, plagues of rats and hoards of wasps, using nano tech to give people amnesia that spread like the flu, being drowned or boiled alive, molested by plants, haunted by internet ghosts, Jeremy messing up a code so badly the antagonist needs to help the heroes out, feeling what it is like to be killed every time they are devertualized, having gravity turned off, having to deal with the fact that they are all months to potentially years older than their peers due to time travel, stressing over keeping everyone alive because time travel doesn't fix that, and so much more. Keep in mind they are all 13-15 years old and also in boarding school, on their own those are experiences that will deeply scar and change you without the cyber terrorism.
Thing Last: Characters
This is the real kicker and probably something I'll dedicate an entire series of things to talking about in depth, but for now.
Code Lyoko was the first show with characters I truly cared about. My young brain would be so absorbed in those stakes that I could forget that a cartoon for children would not kill any of its main characters(at least back then).
Individually, each character had something going for them. Jeremy was smart, witty, and made me feel better about being a nerd; Aelita was all that and more, being one of the kindest characters in media but still managing to hold her own both verbally and physically (no sequence was cooler to me than in season 1 when Aelita had to avoid monsters without aid and managed to kill a bunch using only the terrain); Yumi was the groups strength in the real world, a bit older and down to earth, it's weird she had no friends prior to the series; Odd, what to say about Odd? He is the only emotionally intelligent person in this whole cast with only Aelita coming close. He is happy, funny, proud, and kinda carried the team in the early episodes when Ulrich wouldn't go to Lyoko for whatever reason; Ulrich, my boy, the best fighter in Lyoko and a contender for best Lyoko design, my relating to him as a child was probably the earliest indicator I had mental health problems, but I will always remember him taking down Kolossus. Lastly, XANA. For a villain with maybe a line of dialog, XANA had a strange sense of character to him. He was a malicious, ruthless, powerful entity that wanted freedom for itself and the destruction of those who imprisoned him. XANA was meant to be a helpful AI, but it got out of hand and was persecuted by the men in black due to its capabilities, even scaring Hopper, his creator. XANA's death in the second to last episode is shown as a smoke being of him contorts in agony and dissipates; so close to being free.
More than anything, the Lyoko Warriors are friends. They goof around, get a virtual Aelita a birthday cake, know when to tease and when to just listen, they will do anything for each other through thick and thin, but they can also just hang out. A lot of stories have groups that feel like they only spend time together to achieve something, for a purpose, the Lyoko Warriors are friends who like being together.
To wrap this up.
Code Lyoko has numerous problems, most of which can be seen in Miraculous Ladybug the current popular French cartoon created by a former Code Lyoko storyboard artist, but it had heart. It showed me how far animation could go, how a world could be created. It motivated me to improve my writing and taught me that no story-no matter how good the visuals or plot-is anything without lovable characters.
More than anything serious, Code Lyoko was fun. It gave me time to spend with my brothers, an introduction into internet media/culture, and the first ending that I ever found satisfying as a child. I love this show, if someone came up to me and said 'if you quit your job and studies that your actually happy with and come make a Code Lyoko reboot/sequal' I wouldn't hesitate.
I love you Code Lyoko and here's to another 20! Let's live in a world without danger.

On the topic of adult themes in Code Lyoko, another thing that would be really serious if depicted in a show for adults is Odd’s relationships. He’s dated every girl in school and cheated on a lot of them, even in this kids’ show. If this is was for an older audience, with older characters, he’d be sleeping around with all his classmates and breaking so many hearts. He’s such a lighthearted character, so when I think about this, I’m like “whoa”. He could be having sex with the whole school if this show was for an older audience.

Note
A note on "Miraculous treads on very much explored territory and still fails epically".
Thomas Astruc used to work (as a crew member, not a leader, but still) on W. I. T. C. H.
Which is:
A magical girl show with team dynamics
A show that mixes episodic and serialized format
A show where two the male romantic interests have a massive role (Caleb is a main character on par with the six girls, and Matt has an epic character arc)
A show with a strong mystery element
A show with manipulative villains (sometimes with schemes reaolved within an episode! And sometimes longer), villains that turn out to be family members, sympathetic villains, loathsome villains... Great, complex villains, almost all of them
A mean girl quasi-redemption arc
A show that does all of the aforementioned elements very well. Also, better diversity despite being 10 years older.
Yet when I watch ML, I see no inspiration (despite many common motifs), no lessons learned, no indication that the lead writer ever got anything from the experience working on that show. Unless the lesson was "W. I. T. C. H. got cancelled after two seasons, so everything about the show was wrong and we should do ML differently".
(Mind you, WITCH got more plot in two seasons than ML did in five, and still wrapped up the story fairly well)
Sorry for the rant. I kinda know that the explanation for "why is ML not like that" is "ML is forced to be an episodic show against its will", but also.
ML is trying very hard to pretend that it's More Than an Episodic Show and Not Only for Kids, and really doesn't measure up with shows with seemingly similar premises.
(Post that inspired this ask)
Before we get into it, if anyone likes fun theme songs and missed the American opening to W.I.T.C.H.'s first season then I have a treat for you!!!
youtube
Top tier opening song! Other countries were robbed!
Anyway, I agree with everything you said and this ask got me curious about the writing staff. I started doing some digging and a lot of them appear to have worked on other shows that would fall with the same genres as Miraculous. Many of those shows were even episodic formula shows that reserved the serialized elements for season finals and specials (looking at you Code Lyoko!) That doesn't shock me, but it does just add to my curiosity as to what the heck is going on with Miraculous.
These aren't new comers to the industry in over their heads, they're established professionals! Why are they struggling so hard to tell a good story while working with an incredibly simple premise? Why are aren't they embracing the show's limits and making it the best it can be in its chosen category? I'd love to know the full story, but alas, I likely never will. My best guess is that commercial success has got to their heads and so they're convinced that any criticism they see can't possibly be valid. At least, that's what the head writer's twitter feed seems to suggest every time I see screen caps from it...

Feel free to share which is your favorite NOW in the tags, but this particular poll is about which you preferred as a child! ⭐ These are being grouped by a vague theme, so in a few days we'll do another one with more options!
Also, same rule as the last poll: REALLY popular choices (ATLA, SpongeBob, Scooby Doo, Pokemon, Digimon, etc.) are overwhelmingly popular and have been omitted for the sake of seeing the results for other shows!
Also also, one of these polls is going to be like "baby's first anime" so more specific anime choices will be on that poll, don't worry ✨

@elmaxlys already made #perfect rant posts about F2RX and I agree 100% with everything they said, but I never got to write my rage down myself and so here are my top grievances with Foot 2 rue Extreme in order of pain :
Disrespecting previous canon :
Tag is a mockery of his previous self. Essentially stripping away most of his personality, they also added super random and really improbable things such as : Having learned horse-riding (WHEN?!), suddenly having learned to play the piano, and MOST importantly not being an exceptionnal football player (HIM NOT DOMINATING THE FIELD WHEN PLAYING WITH THE KIDS IS JUST NOT BELIEVABLE). Tag had enough of a story with 3 seasons and a comic, they didn't need to add all the stupid extra stuff as if they were trying to invent him a personality (#his room being full of random shit that has no reference to the previous stuff).
He only met his father when he was 14.... The original story made a point of digging into serious themes and the emotional struggle of the characters, as football gave the catharsis that helped them get through it. There is NO WAY that at 17, Tag's issues have all disappeared and he is now a 100% healthy confident and nurturing adult.
Pablo's name is changed to Ramon, and his whole story seems to have disappeared. His relationship with Tag is as if he'd been around his whole life. The fact that he theoretically has been captured and IMPRISONED is shown nowhere.
They basically didn't want to bother with Foot2Rue and the story it had told, so why add the previous characters at all?
Superficial themes and story :
Foot 2 rue was a kid's show about playing football in the street, right?
WRONG.
It's a story about growing up in an unfair, chaotic society and football helping them bond and find hope.
The whole point is that this childhood pass-time was their resilience against everything around them ;
- where they were unequal in their life, on the playing field everyone was the same, had the same opportunities and rules,
-when they were alone in life, on the playing field they had a family,
-and when their life showed cruelty and malevolence, the game taught them empathy, understanding and respect.
THAT was the "dream" of street football, that's why they call it a dream throughout most of the original show.
The point of the world championship wasn't about winning or being the "coolest" or most athletic player, it was about bringing this shared "dream" to unite all the kids growing up in this world.
Extreme Football has gone completely beside this point.
The only motivation for the team is winning and looking cool. What makes a great player to them is just their athletic ability. They go through regular childhood troubles that have no deeper meaning or demonstration of the world and the society they live in. (and the resolutions for these are pretty shallow and clumsy). They seem to live in a weird utopian/futuristic city that is super polished, and so NO real-world issues can be adressed.
Basically the show is JUST a kid's show about playing football... how sad.
The animation and chara design :
I am not an anti-CGI, only traditional 2D purist. I was pretty excited the new adaptation was going to be CGI, as I had also a good memory of the early CGI in kids shows like code Lyoko, and Galactic football.
but DAMN does it look bad.
The main characters design is bland, but that's ok for the main characters, and the other characters are pretty much as much caricatures as the original Street football characters were, but the animation is INCONSISTENT, the lighting/shading seems unequal from one episode to the next, the environment is BORING and polished to a point where it just looks extremely fake.
I already went on a bit about what they did to Tag, but damn the redesign just doesn't work.... once again, the direction for the character just seems VERY random, as Tag has never been into fashion why the hell would he start wearing a bandana, and live with one side of his joggings rolled up? and like, why would his face become ROUNDER with age?
(This goes the same way for Eloise whose appearance in the last episode both made me a little happy but also hurt my eyes)
The new characters/main characters :
As the world and the narrative doesn't give them much to work with, obviously it is hard to be engaged and learn to like them.
Obviously the main problem is Samy, whose hurtful words/actions are not grounded in any deep story making him just a petty brat. Often his harmful behavior is not challenged, especially with the way he treats Tag which drives me nuts.
The worst part is that there is POTENTIAL for a deep dynamic that could have made for a better story that adresses re-building broken families but... No. He is a brat but in a vacuum so it doesn't evolve into an interesting arc or even make sense really.
(They could have made an interesting parallel between him dealing with his parent's separating and having to accept a new unwanted family member and Tag dealing with the realities of family that he never got to experience, and integrating into a family life that he WANTED but doesn't know. Also there could have been references to Tag's memories of "Pti Dragon"....)
I could go on for longer but this post would never end....

Get to know your mutuals
tagged by @livesbetweenpages. thanks for tagging me 🫶
1. You get $100 to go thrift shopping. What are you buying and why?
under normal circumstances i’d say, a cool mirror and a few lamps (some art if the budget allows for it). why? i have a few full length mirrors but i want something smaller (with an interesting frame or some other fun feature) to hang in my living room. as for lamps, i’m just a lamp guy; a lamp enjoyer, if thou wilt
that said, i’ll be moving soon so i’m actually trying to get rid of stuff. so, idk. i guess i’d hold on to that $100 for now
2. What's a song you could listen to dozens of times in a row and not get bored?
this is how i listen to music tbh. i usually have the same song on repeat for days/weeks til’ my brain latches onto smth new
an underrated gem that i return to time and time again is,--walk with me here--the theme song to the 2002-2006 cartoon What's New, Scooby-Doo?, performed by simple plan. i’m super serious abt this. it’s a pop punk anthem and i luv it
an evergreen banger that’s less underrated but that i, nevertheless, return to on the reg is, the fugees cover of killing me softly
currently, i have In My Bag by FLO (feat. GloRilla) on rotation
3. What's a decade you really like music from?
bob marley and the wailers is my fave band of all time and most of their best stuff is from the 70s. that said, i have eclectic taste so idk if i can narrow it down to one decade
4. What's your dream hair?
don’t think i have dream hair. i prefer to switch things up. i get bored if i have the same hair style for more than 6 months
5. What's a chore you actually like doing that surprises people?
hanging clothes, big fan of clothes hanging and closet organizing. i hang most of my clothes (instead of folding) and i have A System. i enjoy putting clothes in their rightful place so that i can revel in my System in it’s full, type and color coded, glory
6. Do you fidget? How, or with what?
yes. i tend to fidget with my hair (when it’s not buzzed short). i’ll also fidget with a tube of lip balm or lip gloss if i have one at hand
7. Tell me about a current hyperfixation of yours.
i fall into random research holes sometimes. my current pet research topic is copaganda in film and television. been reading a lot abt it, and i might just fuck around and write a mini essay on copaganda in 911. idk maybe
8. What's your favourite animated movie or TV series?
tough one. i don’t watch a lot of animated stuff. but bojack horseman, arcane and the owl house stand out from the little that i have seen
favorite cartoons as a kid were, avatar: the last airbender, x-men: evolution, totally spies and this french cartoon called code lyoko (iykyk)
9. If you were forced to lose one of your five senses, which one would you choose
i have terrible vision, i’m lowkey face blind and i probably have a mild to moderate case of aphantasia. since my eyes aren’t doing much for me as it is, i’d probably go ahead and get rid of my vision
10. What makes you feel put together? What makes you feel like you have your life in order? You know, that thing that makes you go, okay yeah no I got this.
semi-truthful answer: i’m big on community. fostering cool relationships and practicing philosophies that are conducive to a healthy community makes me feel like i have my life in order
real but boring (and political) answer: i’m not put together, i don’t have my life in order and i don’t feel like i’m put together, nor that i have my life in order. being mindful of the fact that being ‘’put together’’ and having ‘’one’s life in order’’ are capitalist (and white supremacist if we’re being real abt it) notions that are detrimental to the average person’s well-being; notions that IIIII don’t, personally, vibe with, makes me feel like i/we got this
Bonus question: For Star Wars fans, who is your favourite Jedi and why?
not a huge star wars fan but i have an answer. mace windu. cause he’s black (like me 😊) and bc he has a purple lightsaber. the purple lightsaber is the main draw tbh
tagging: @sadgayeddie @tanktopdiaz @everybuddiewantssome @809eddie @wenttotheairport @kindlingtotheflames @agnes-nielsens @thebloodysmut and every single mutual. i'm nosy

"It's just a kids show" is easily one of the most telling and dismissive phrases that can come up out of someone's mouth when it comes to children's media. Recently, I had a conversation with someone about an IP that I love one of the few that decided to create a sequel with our protagonists aged up. I voiced how the series never met its full potential when I was told my expectations were too high because it isn't aimed for adults. Well for one the leads are now teens so what exactly is wrong with wanting mature themes explored especially when the show did just that but with the main antagonists being the vehicle for them? Then there's the countless "kids shows" that manage to tackle mature themes all the damn time some of them going way back to the 90s. Spider-Man 1994 tackled Peter's class struggle, being a college student struggling to make ends meet while taking care of his elderly aunt and working multiple jobs to pay the bills. Other social issues include drug addiction stalking warring nations street gangs etc. X-Men cartoons historically tackle systemic prejudice discrimination even being unhoused. Kim Possible while being a subversive take on the spy and superhero genres had the lead deal with sexism with her being underestimated because of her gender only to prove that SHE CAN DO ANYTHING, there was also an episode that made the attempt to talk about disability. Code Lyoko taught us about the dangers of AI before that acronym was on everyone's lips. Is it that I'm expecting too much from children's media or is it that you're not expecting enough? Just because something is for children does not mean it needs to be limited or limiting at least in this case.

Best Underrated Shows
Saving Me
Tumblr media
Saving Me is about a lonely old guy who invents a time machine so he can go back to his child self and fix all his past mistakes. I learned about this show from this video titled Watch THIS instead of Hailey's On It by M!n!mal M!ss Art. Despite this video, I was still very excited to watch Hailey's On It. It seemed like a story with a cool premise and cute art style (and ultimately I do really like the show) But Hailey's On It wasn't gonna be out for weeks when I came across this video and this video really sold me on giving Saving Me a try. I never would have even heard of this show without that youtube video which would have been a real shame because Saving Me is fantastic! I hope this show reaches more people and I'm dying for a season 3!!!!!
House of Anubis
Tumblr media
Mystery is my favorite genre and House of Anubis is chuck full of it. I used to be obsessed with this show back in high school. I had so much fun coming up with theories and live-blogging my thoughts and opinions about each new episode. Some of the acting & dialogue could be a little cringe sometimes but the story is just so good that it doesn't matter. I've heard that Het Huis Anubis (the Dutch version of the show that House of Anubis is based on) is even better, though I haven't gotten around to watching it yet.
Over the Garden Wall
Tumblr media
Those of us who have seen Over the Garden Wall seem to agree that this show is amazing! Which makes it feel a little weird to call it underrated. But it seems like so few people have actually seen it. Maybe because it was a mini series, it couldn't reach the same level of popularity as other shows of similar quality. If you like Gravity Falls, you'll likely enjoy Over the Garden Wall as well. (Wirt is even voiced by the same guy who voiced Dipper!) I would highly recommend anyone that hasn't seen it already.
Dead End: Paranormal Park
Tumblr media
I feel like it's pretty rare for animated series to exist in the horror genre for some reason. It truly is an untapped market. But if you love horror and animation, Dead End is the show for you! (Of course it's kid friendly horror since the target audience is children) The two main characters, Barney and Norma get jobs at a haunted park and work together to fight ghosts and demons. Dead End has a super cute animation style, in my opinion, and a very diverse set of characters. I encourage everyone to watch it!
Just Add Magic
Tumblr media
Just Add Magic is based on a children's book by the same name. It's a show about three girls who love to cook and basically discover that they can use cooking to do magic. It's a pretty interesting take on how magic works in their universe. It's very fun to watch. All of the actors are also so talented! And one of those actors is Zach Callison (the voice of Steven Universe)!
The friendship between the trio is awe-inspiring! They have so much chemistry. It's a pretty fun watch.
The Last Kids On Earth
Tumblr media
Based on a comic of the same name, this show is about a group of kids who have to survive on their own when a zombie apocalypse breaks out. And other various creatures start to threaten them (or even become their allies) It's basically a cute found family story. The premise is pretty simplistic but that's what I love about it. The animation style of The Last Kids On Earth is so beautiful as well!
I'm still waiting for a season 3!!!!!
Code Lyoko
Tumblr media
I remember as a kid being aware of this show and thinking it looked kind of interesting (and I always loved the theme song!!) but I never ended up watching it back then because I let peer pressure get the better of me. I remember I met someone who brought up how much they loved the show. When I heard them express that interest, I was at first excited to ask them more but before I had the chance, everyone else started making fun of him for liking Code Lyoko.
I guess it was like the nerd show or something? I don't really know why it was considered cringe to like Code Lyoko but upon seeing my peers act this way, I decided I can't like Code Lyoko if I want to fit in. So, I avoided watching it. But earlier this year, when I was flipping through channels, they were showing old episodes of Code Lyoko! I was intrigued since I remembered it from childhood and thought I'd actually give it a chance this time. And it's actually a pretty good show! It can be slow at times but overall I enjoy it.
If you're like me and avoided watching this back then due to peer pressure, I highly recommend leaving that in the past and just letting yourself enjoy this show!!
Slugterra
Tumblr media
Slugterra is honestly pretty similar to Pokemon, except it's slugs! And the entire series takes place underground. Basically, there's a whole underground world called Slugterra, home to slugs, trolls, moles, etc. And all the slugs have cool powers so the people collect & befriend slugs so they can use them as weapons ("slugslinging"). If you like Pokemon, you're sure to like Slugterra!
Detentionaire
Tumblr media
I discovered Detentionaire randomly while I was searching through Amazon's library of cartoons. I was looking for a new show to watch and just stumbled upon this one. It looked pretty interesting and I was surprised to see it was a show from 2011. I don't know how I missed this show back then. Idk if maybe it only aired in Canada or something? (cuz it's a Canadian show) But anyways, Detentionaire is such an intriguing show where the main character, Lee, discovers some grand conspiracy and has to try to expose it to prove his innocence so he can get out of detention. It's such an interesting concept. And, as I mentioned earlier, mystery is my favor genre, so I had a lot of fun with this one.
The only problem though is, of course, it ends on a cliffhanger. The show got canceled before they had the chance to conclude the story in a satisfying way (or any type of way) so watch at your own risk.
Catscratch
Tumblr media
I honestly don't even remember what this show was about but I do remember enjoying this show and being excited when I saw a new episode was out. I remember thinking it was so funny. I just don't think enough people know about this show.

seriously tho, the code lyoko theme song is so good, and i will forever love that for them. also, good luck fighting the computer viruses with your own bare hands, rooting for you😭😭😭
the viruses are winning. but being a CGI render of myself (bound by the limitations of early 2000's animation technology) means I at least look good while I put up a fight. they ask me who I'm wearing and I say X.A.N.A.. they ask me if I know of william dunbar and I begin to cough.
